Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 onion finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 can 28 oz crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can 6 oz tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup red wine optional
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 9 lasagna noodles cooked al dente
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Béchamel Sauce:
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • Salt and nutmeg to taste

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain excess fat.
  • Add chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet. Sauté until the onion is translucent.
  • Stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, red wine (if using), oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • In a separate saucepan, melt butter for the béchamel sauce. Whisk in flour until smooth.
  • Gradually add milk, whisking constantly to avoid lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and a pinch of nutmeg.
  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • In a baking dish, layer lasagna noodles, beef sauce, béchamel, and a sprinkle of both mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat for two more layers.
  • Finish with a layer of noodles, remaining sauce, and a generous topping of cheese.
  • Bake for 30-35 minutes or until the top is golden and bubbling.
  • Allow the lasagna to rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving.
