Ingredients

  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples such as Granny Smith
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 prepared pie crusts homemade or store-bought
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter cut into small pieces
  • 1 egg for egg wash

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  • In a large bowl, toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour.
  • Roll out one pie crust and place it in a pie dish. Add the apple filling and dot with butter.
  • Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the filling. Trim excess dough and crimp the edges to seal.
  • Beat the egg and brush it over the top crust. Sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  • Cut a few slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  • Bake for 15 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 350°F (175°C) and bake for an additional 35-40 minutes or until the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly.
  • Allow the pie to cool before slicing.
